Pequot Lakes Legion Auxiliary members attend state convention
The American Legion Auxiliary held its 94th state convention in Mahnomen on July 18-20. Auxiliary members from Pequot Lakes, representing the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #49, were Sharon Higgins, Dee Dee Buckley and Patricia DeZurik.
Raleen Tolzman of Cleveland, Minn., state president of the American Legion Auxiliary, presided. Martin Warnsholz, mayor of Mahnomen, and Robert J. Durant, White Earth Reservation Tribal Council secretary/treasurer, welcomed everyone. Kaitlin Fernlund, incoming honorary department junior president and a member of the Waite Park Unit #428, brought greetings from the Junior Auxiliary, which includes members who are under age 18.
Caprisha Buchanan of Circle Pines, the 2013 governor of Minnesota Girls State, also brought greetings. Keynote speaker was Doris Ann Werlinger of Rapid City, S.D., the northwestern national vice president of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Convention highlights included Unit #49 receiving the Presidents Award for Field Service, Irene Myer’s Chairman and Certificate of Merit for Children & Youth, Home Service and Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation.
The newly elected officers 2013-14, American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Minnesota, are: Shirley Frederick of Hackensack, department president; Chris Ronning of Maple Grove, department first vice president; and Sandy Fredrickson of Glenville, department second vice president.
