Home Brewers Contest ‘on tap’ in November at Grand View

Grand View Lodge in Nisswa will hold a Home Brewers Contest on Saturday, Nov. 23, at the fourth annual Grand Brewfest.

The contest is open to all styles of beer. A panel of judges will conduct a tasting of each entry and award the best Home Brewer of the 2013 Grand Brewfest.

The winner will work with Horace Cunningham, brewmaster at Third Street Brewhouse in Cold Spring. Cunningham, a native of Jamaica, has an Applied Microbiology degree and is a certified Brewmaster. He has trained in the United States and Europe, and has worked throughout the world. He currently holds the position of president of the Master Brewers Association of America.

If chosen by the judging panel, the winner will produce a keg of beer at Third Street Brewhouse. Later in the year, that keg will be brought to Grand View Lodge to be tapped in the Northwoods Pub with the brewers’ closest friends.

“When we first began in 2009, we had only four breweries and about 75 participants,” said Jim Benson, director of operations at Grand View Lodge. “But just this past year, we grew to 10 breweries and over 300 participants.”

Benson indicated that the planning committee hoped to tap into a new “brew” segment – the home brewers of Minnesota.

Entries will be available as a first-come, first-serve basis to the first 24 individuals who respond. There is a $20 entry fee with 100 percent of proceeds donated to the Brainerd Kinship Partners.

Participants are required to bring five bottles (minimum of 12 ounces each) for the judging, along with a brief description and name of the beer. Along with the submission, participants will receive a free entrance to the Grand Brewfest event.
