Donald Peter Johnson, 50, was fatally shot in the incident that occurred on Sleepy Hollow Road in St. Mathias Township.

Goddard, who was treated and released from the hospital, and Deputy Adam Kronstedt were placed on administrative leave after the shooting incident, which is policy.

Both deputies were doing well and, per policy, both will remain on leave until ready to return to work, according to a news release from Sheriff Todd Dahl.

According to the news release, at 12:49 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a man requesting emergency service to his location.

The caller was unclear as to the nature of the emergency so deputies were dispatched to conduct a welfare check at the residence on Sleepy Hollow Road in St. Mathias Township.

Upon arrival, there was no answer at the residence. While still on the scene a single gunshot was heard coming from the woods just south of the residence. During a search of the wooded area, deputies were able to locate the subject — Johnson — in a tree stand.

Johnson was armed and threatened to shoot officers at the scene. Additional resources were deployed and negotiations started. After several hours, Johnson began retreating from his location and appeared ready to comply with the requests to surrender. However, he began to retreat back to the tree stand and began shooting, wounding Goddard.

Gunfire was returned and Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. Goddard was taken to Essentia Health-Brainerd Medical Center and later released.

Johnson was transported to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office pending an autopsy.

The Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Baxter police, Baxter K9 Unit, Brainerd police, Minnesota State Patrol, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) and North Ambulance. Members of the Crow Wing County Tactical Team were also on scene.

Further investigation by the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office and the BCA will continue.
