Pine River mother, son celebrate release of inspirational book

Kathy Soukup of Pine River and her son, Joel Soukup, authors of “Standing Tall on One Leg” (WestBow Press, 2013), will celebrate the release of their book from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, with a noon book reading at Bethany Book Store in Baxter.

The book journeys through 10 years of their lives as Joel receives a cancer diagnosis at age 16 and a recurrent tumor at age 20. The book is written from Kathy’s perspective as a mother of a child with a cancer diagnosis and also from Joel’s perspective as a teenager receiving the diagnosis.

The words of each are woven together throughout the story as they share their journey from receiving the life-threatening diagnosis and subsequent treatments to the surgery where Joel’s entire right leg, buttock and pelvis need to be amputated to save his life.

Joel is a student at St. Cloud State University studying community psychology. He hopes to use his education and experience to help others who have been handed an unforeseen, life-altering diagnosis.
