Kids' Fishing Derby calls for education, safety
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers park in Crosslake hosted a Kids’ Fishing Derby on Saturday, Aug. 10, which included not only fishing but also education on lake health, safety and fish identification.
Before casting a line, the kids and their families toured three stations.
The Whitefish Area Property Owners’ Association spoke with children on lake health, including how the organization measures water clarity and information on aquatic invasive species like zebra mussels.
The Corps of Engineers educated children on property life jacket use, including how to size them and the importance of wearing a life jacket.
Conservation officer Mike Lee was at the derby with information on what kinds of fish are in the area’s lakes and how to identify them. He also showed children his Department of Natural Resources vehicle.
After the educational stations, kids grabbed their poles and bait and went fishing to earn awards.
