Harvest dinner slated Aug. 17 in Nisswa
The fifth annual Lakes and Farm Harvest Dinner will be Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Nisswa Community Center.
Each year the event celebrates “community and bounty” and includes a farmer’s market opening at 4:30 p.m., social time with a cash bar at 5 p.m. and dinner served at 6 p.m. Local farmers and ranchers produce the food served, and Pequot Lakes Chef Justin Bolz-Andolshek of Lakes Latte prepares a gourmet menu with the food.
Entertainment will include the music of Hans Blix and the Weapons Inspectors. Speakers include Warren Formo, executive director of the Minnesota Agricultural Waters Coalition, and Arlene Jones from The Farm on St. Mathias, who will speak on two topics — “Seriously Local Food” and “Farm 2 School.”
Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children 15 and younger. For limited seating tickets, call Judy Wallschlaeger at 218-543-6257 or Sarah Kuschel at 218-587-5531.
Community groups sponsoring the event include the Cass County Farm Bureau, Crow Wing County Farm Bureau, Whitefish Property Owners Association, Pine River Watershed Alliance, Nisswa and Leader Lions Clubs, D & D Beer Co. and Happy Dancing Turtle.
“We want to keep communications open between producers and consumers so that lakes people are aware of what farmers are doing to avoid water issues and farmers stay up to date on what they can do to continue to preserve the waterways around them,” said Sarah Kuschel from the Cass County Farm Bureau.
The first Harvest Dinner was a celebration of a successful cooperation to solve a water issue and the promise to work together on future problems. The Harvest Dinner has received two awards in five years, including recognition by the American Farm Bureau.
Proceeds from this event, which includes a silent auction, are used to support youth events.
