Big Pine Lake Rock Dam repairs discussed

Email News Alerts

Will there ever be a permanent fix for the damages done to Big Pine Lake Rock Dam in Crosslake?

That was the question brought to the Crow Wing County Board on Tuesday, July 23: What repairs could be done to the dam and, the bigger question, who would design, build and pay for the repairs?

County Engineer Tim Bray said the dam is in need of repairs after some unusual rain events. The latest repairs were performed in April and May after the dam sustained flood damage from 2012 and 2013.

Bray said the cost of the repairs was $26,300; $6,950 of it was reimbursed through the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the 2012 emergency declaration. The remaining amount, $19,350, was funded by the county highway department. Bray said the highway department is requesting reimbursement from the Big Pine Lake Subordinate Service District fund.

Nancy Rudberg, president of the lake association, asked the county board if it could help pay some of the expenses from the recent flood damage. Rudberg also asked if the county could wait until the association collects its second half of assessments to collect its money.

“I’d like to remind the board that our lake is used by a lot of people,” Rudberg said. “There is a public landing.”

After much discussion, the board voted 4-1, with Commissioner Paul Koering voting against, to transfer $19,350 from the district to the county highway department to reimburse the county for the repairs made on the dam when the funds are made available.

The county board also authorized submitting a grant request to the Crow Wing Soil and Water Conservation District for reimbursement of any portion of the amount that may be eligible for reimbursement.

The board asked that Bray come up with alternatives for the development of a design to make long-term repairs to the dam and present them to the board at its next meeting.
