Pine River-Backus to implement STRIVE program

Pine River-Backus School announces the implementation of the Rotary STRIVE program this fall.

The Students Taking a Renewed Interest in the Value of Education (STRIVE) program will be coordinated by Central Lakes Rotary members Richard Teegen and Steven Hansen and their spouses.

The STRIVE program focuses on assisting a selected group of seniors to develop a clear path to graduation and life beyond. The STRIVE program is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Central Lakes in partnership with the Pine River-Backus High School principal, guidance counselor and upper class teachers as well as volunteers from the Central Lakes Rotary community.

The leaders and mentors will meet with the selected group of seniors twice each month, September through May. Speakers will address topics such as goal setting, study habits, test taking, making choices, interviewing for employment, career opportunities, personal roadmap, the power of positive thinking, free enterprise, job opportunities, money management, perseverance and self worth.

“We are very pleased to be able to offer the STRIVE program in conjunction with the Central Lakes Rotary Club,” said PR-B High School Principal Trent Langemo. “As we looked at the STRIVE program’s structure and focus, we found it fits very well with many of the points of our educational program goals, helps increase community involvement in education, and provides scholarships for students that successfully complete the program when established goals are attained.”

STRIVE participants who successfully complete the program will be awarded Central Lakes Rotary scholarships. In addition, if a participant elects to attend Central Lakes College, his or her scholarship program will match the Rotary scholarship amount awarded.

The Central Lakes Rotary Club is excited to be able to offer the STRIVE program in the PR-B School District, said Rotary President Al Ploeger.

“The STRIVE coordinators, Richard Teegen and Steven Hansen, have been working for nearly a year developing and refining the STRIVE program, specifically for PR-B based on the experiences and successes of other Minnesota Rotary clubs with their local school systems,” he said.

The Central Lakes Rotary Club will host a fundraising event Friday, July 26, for the STRIVE scholarships. Those interested in attending the fundraising event are asked to contribute $25 or more per person and contact Richard Teegen at 218-682-2863 or Steven Hansen at 218-947-4477.

Those unable to attend but who wish to provide financial support for STRIVE scholarships can mail their contribution to: Central Lakes Rotary Foundation, P.O. Box 587, Pequot Lakes, MN 56435.
