Pine River man injured in crash

Three adults and two children were taken to Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd on Tuesday, June 25, after being involved in a three-vehicle rollover crash on Highway 18 and Two Mile Road, east of Brainerd, the Minnesota State Patrol reported.

It was reported at 9:58 a.m. that a vehicle driven by Cheryl K. Hawkins, 50, Pine River, was traveling westbound on Highway 18 when she stopped in the lane of traffic to make a left turn onto Two Mile Road. Jeffrey K. Elder, 30, Brainerd, also was traveling westbound on Highway 18 when his vehicle rear-ended Hawkins’ vehicle, which rolled and then sideswiped a third vehicle, driven by David L. Sylte, 65, Brainerd.

Hawkins and her passenger, Ronald W. Joy, 72, Crosby, were injured. Her vehicle stopped upside down in the ditch. Elder had back and neck pain and minor cuts and bruises and was transported to the hospital. Elder had two children in the vehicle with him: Wyatt Elder, 6, and Caleb Elder, 4, who were not injured, but went to the hospital to be with their parents, the State Patrol reported. The Elder vehicle stopped upside down in the middle of the road.

Sylte was not injured.

The Brainerd Fire Department, Brainerd Police Department, Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office and North Memorial Ambulance assisted the State Patrol at the scene.
