Pine River Take a Kid Fishing Day gets a new twist
The Pine River Lions have been hosting Take a Kid Fishing Day in Pine River since 1992, but holding the event during a school day brought in more than 60 students, an increase over past years.
The event is modeled after a DNR program by the same name, though they are not associated. Both programs are an attempt to get children interested in fishing, a pastime important to the economy and ecology of Minnesota.
All three sections of Pine River-Backus Elementary School’s fourth grade attended the field trip and caught more than 200 fish. All students received bags of tackle for participating. There were door prize gifts of $25, tackle boxes and a single life jacket.
The event was made possible by donations from the Pine River Lions, Norway Lake Association, CSI Sports, Lake N River Bait and volunteers of time and boats. The event was strictly catch-and-release. If possible, the Lions would like to host the event during a school day in the future.
