HDT seeks hydroponic/aquaponic intern

Looking to add to its demonstration site, Happy Dancing Turtle (HDT) is accepting applications for a hydroponic/aquaponic intern for the summer growing season.

The internship will be hands-on and involves the design, construction and maintenance of demonstration systems for both hydroponic and aquaponic production.

Hydroponics is a method of growing plants through the use of mineral nutrient solutions in water instead of planting in soil. Aquaponic farming is the addition of fish or other creatures to a hydroponic system.

“We were intrigued by hydroponic operations in the area and wanted to run our own experiments,” said Jim Chamberlin, food and water security coordinator for HDT. “That’s where the intern position comes in.”

The goal of the internship is to evaluate the productivity and economic feasibility of hydroponic systems, as well as the quality of product harvested. A final report detailing the design and feasibility of the systems as well as other systems in the region will be a final outcome of the internship also.

“There are many growing operations in the area, but as far as we can tell no one has determined the economic viability of these operations. That’s what we intend to learn,” Chamberlin said.
