From the Pine River Journal

Always something new, always something different is the way the VFW plans its dances. The Hot Peppers: Dorothy Schleiger, Helen and Elmer Olson and John and Robert Haack will furnish the music for the dance Saturday evening, May 28, at the local armory.

In spite of unfavorable weather and unavoidable postponement, the senior class play “You’re the Doctor,” which was held at the school auditorium Friday evening, drew a record crowd.

50 years ago, May 23, 1963

The opening weekend of fishing in this area was marred by strong winds and snow. Many fishermen were unable to get out on lakes at all because of the high waves and cold.

For some weeks now, Pine River Fire Department members have been plagued with fire calls, which, when answered, have proved to be false alarms. We have no way of knowing who these funny little people are, whether they be juvenile or adult, but one can only say that their actions brand them as being thoughtless, selfish and entirely irresponsible as far as having any consideration for anything else than their own criminal actions.

Scott Sater, music teacher at Backus School, was named Backus Teacher of the Year for 1988.

On the third day of May, late in the spring, Region 5ECSU sponsored a fair for writing. This being the second, was held at a lake with hopes that a better atmosphere it would make.

Centennial National Bank announced the opening of its new production office in Pine River. The office is located in the lower level of the Brad Swanson Law Office.
