Memorial Day services planned in Pine River, Backus, Hackensack

Annual Memorial Day services will be held Sunday, May 26, at Finley Cemetery in Hackensack and Monday, May 27, in Hackensack, Backus and Pine River.

Pine River

Pine River American Legion: Memorial Day service will be celebrated by the Pine River American Legion on Monday, May 27, at the dam in Pine River.

Service will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by another service at the Pine River Cemetery at 10:15 a.m., and one at the Swanburg Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. The Pine River American Legion Color Guard will present the colors.

Backus

Backus American Legion: Former Army captain and West Point graduate Melinda Thein of Plymouth will speak at the Memorial Day ceremony at the Backus Evergreen Cemetery at 10 a.m. Monday, with the Ponto Lake service following at approximately 11 a.m.

Thein graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1998. She served as a quartermaster officer. She was a platoon leader and brigade logistician.

Her last assignment was serving as a senior personnel officer as a brigade adjutant for the 937th Engineer (Combat) Group. Her unit supported the 3rd Infantry Division from the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Her awards with the military include a Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and Parachutist Badge.

She served with the Army for 10 years. She is the daughter of William and Mel Taylor.

Services provided by the Backus American Legion will include posting of the colors, remarks by Legion Commander William Taylor and Auxiliary President Mel Taylor, performance of “America the Beautiful,” an address by Thein, a color guard rifle salute, and laying of a memorial poppy wreath with Taps. The Ponto Lake service will also include a speech by James Ballentin of the Ponto Lake Town Board.

Hackensack

Hackensack American Legion: Memorial Day ceremonies will begin a day earlier in Hackensack, when the Hackensack American Legion Auxiliary meets at Finley Cemetery at 1 p.m. Sunday.

A ceremony will also be held Monday at the Cass County Killed in Action Memorial in the Hackensack City Park at 9:30 a.m., followed by a parade leading to the Boy River in honor of Navy veterans, and then a formal service at 10 a.m. at the Hillcrest Cemetery.

Brian Swedburg, pastor of the Lighthouse Evangelical Free Church in Hackensack, will be a guest speaker for Memorial Day services.
