Administrative consultant Dan Vogt told the council that Lyonais has experience as a municipal auditor at Larson Allen (now Clifton Larson Allen), and most recently worked at Landis+Gyr in Pequot Lakes.

While the city had advertised the position at $50,000-$55,000 a year, Vogt said Lyonais was almost overqualified for the job and required a higher rate.

“He’s more than substantially qualified for the position; $50,000 to $55,000 was not going to do the job for him,” Vogt said.

Vogt said Lyonais is highly qualified not only in finance but also management and leadership.

Lyonais’ position as senior director of finance at Landis+Gyr was moved to another area, Vogt said, but Lyonais wished to stay in the area, which is why he sought the position with the city.

Council member Mark Wessels expressed concern over Lyonais’ higher pay than what was advertised for the position, and said he was worried Lyonais would quickly move on if offered a higher-paid position somewhere else.

Vogt cited Lyonais’ long stays at other jobs and felt Lyonais would make a commitment to the city. Vogt said the city has room in the budget to pay more in this instance.

The council was unanimous in its decision to hire Lyonais. Lyonais will begin at $70,000, then progress to $75,000 a year. His first day is May 20.
