The Pine River Market Square, a farmers’ and crafters’ market, will begin its fifth year in Pine River on Friday, May 31, in the same downtown location at the corner of Barclay Avenue (Main Street) and Third Street.

The market will run Fridays through September from 2:30-5:30 p.m. and will feature plants, produce, baked and canned goods, crafts and guest chefs.

The first market will host the Pine River Garden Club’s fourth annual Plant Sale and serves as a kickoff for the season while raising funds for a horticulture scholarship to a high school student in the area.

New this year will be a few visits from the Prairie Bay Restaurant food truck presenting educational information on preparation of fresh produce, and the Baxter restaurant will have food for sale as well. May 31 will be the food truck’s first visit to help kick off another season of the market in Pine River.

Vendors within a 60-mile radius of Pine River are welcome and encouraged to participate in this established market. This includes crafters as well as gardeners/farmers, bakers and canners, as long as they abide by the Minnesota statutes for farmers’ markets and the Pine River Market Square guidelines.

Vendors currently registered include Armstrong Acres of Backus (produce, chickens, canned goods and some baked goods); Grampa G’s of Pillager (produce, artisan breads, canned goods); Peaced Goods of Backus (organic baked goods, crafts, refurbished furniture and repurposed goods); and Rising Star of Pine River (breads).

The unique Community Booth will feature early fresh produce from Happy Dancing Turtle’s hoop house (greens and radishes to start) and South Fork Farm of Pine River (eggs, canned goods and more). The Community Booth accepts goods from local growers who do not have enough for a booth of their own. The venrod application form and guidelines can be found at, or call Barb Mann at 218-838-6058 to have forms mailed.

Market sponsors are being secured. Board members for 2013 include: BJ Allen, chair; Amber Hunt, vice chair and co-market manager; Quinn Swanson, secretary; Barb Mann, treasurer; Charles Krysel, co-market manager; Janice Gardiner, business representative; and Pam and Larry Riggs, customer representatives.

The Pine River Market Square is a member of both the Minnesota Farmers’ Market Association and Minnesota Grown and is listed in the free Minnesota Grown Directory.
