Storm warning systems topic of Chautauqua program

John Bowen, Crow Wing County emergency management director, will present “It Was a Dark and Stormy Night ...” as the Crosslake Chautauqua Program from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, at the Crosslake Community Center.

Bowen will explain the National Weather Service’s SKYWARN system and how it functions to provide early storm identification and warning to communities. Bowen will discuss how storm spotter volunteers and sophisticated technology interact to protect life and property.

He will also explain how storm spotters are trained and how they communicate with local National Weather Service offices.
