It was reported that David F. Virnig, 60, Pierz, was driving southbound on Highway 371 in the right lane when he entered the intersection at county roads 13 and 77 and hit another vehicle broadside. Virnig hit a vehicle driven by Jesse Y. Nelson, 27, Pine River, who was stopped on County Road 77 in the eastbound lane. Nelson began to accelerate into the intersection when his vehicle was hit and he struck a third vehicle driven by Kurt B. Nelson, 48, Lake Shore, who was not injured.

Virnig and Jesse Nelson were taken by ambulance to Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd. Virnig was discharged Friday, April 19, and Nelson was transported to St. Cloud Hospital where he was in fair condition Monday, April 22.

Four passengers in Virnig’s vehicle were injured and taken to the Brainerd hospital. Lowell D. Huston, 60, Rice; Diana D. Vaverek, 59, Cushing; and Mary J. Colombe, 61, and Danette M. Ringwelski, 53, both of Little Falls, were all treated and then released.

The State Patrol said there was heavy blowing snow with some sticking to the traffic lights that may have played a factor in the crash.
