75 years ago, April 28, 1938

From the Pine River Journal

The choir from the Mildred Chapel presented the Easter Cantata “Psalms of Victory” at the Blind Lake Schoolhouse last Sunday afternoon. A large crowd enjoyed the program.

(Around the house) For That Musty Odor. To remove a musty odor from a room, put a drop of oil of lavender into the corners.

Friday evening, April 19, the 4-H Share the Fun talent program was presented in the high school auditorium. Two clubs from Bungo participated — North Star 4-H club and the Pine Valley Pioneers 4-H club. Congratulations to the Pine Valley Pioneers who placed in the blue ribbon group.

(Editorial) Some time ago, James Clark, former director of business research for the state of Minnesota, wrote an article in the Minneapolis Star, describing the things a small town should strive for in the effort to show continued and constant improvement ... Pine River is gifted with all the necessary requirements, plus many not mentioned in Mr. Clark’s article.

The Cavalry Covenant Church of Alpha, Wis., was the scene of a beautiful candlelight wedding in a setting of palms on Feb. 23 at 7:30 o’clock when Miss Karen Marie Gustafson, daughter of Mrs. Althea Gustafson of Grantsburg and the late Mr. Alget R. Gustafson, became the bride of Mr. Bruce Eveland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Eveland of Backus.

(Photo) Recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Pine River Chamber of Commerce was presented to Paul Gardiner on Monday evening. Gardiner is the owner of Gardiner Hardware here, has been president of the national Hardware Hank association, and has distinguished himself in Chamber of Commerce events, Boy Scouts and many other civic projects locally.

(Photo) Twenty-eight sheep including some spring lambs were lost in a fire last week at the Alan Crimmins residence northwest of Pine River. The cause of the fire is thought to be a faulty heatlamp used in the barn.

From the Pine River Journal

The Pine River-Backus School Board accepted the resignations of longtime basketball coaches Bob Nelson and Randy Schwegel Monday night. Nelson was head coach for Backus, then Pine River-Backus for 25 years. Schwegel was assistant coach, also for 25 years.

Thank you to everyone who bowled in the March 16 Best-Ball Bowling Tournament to raise funds for the new community park to be built this spring next to the Pine River American Legion. Fourteen teams of four enjoyed pizza, pop and competition for the “golden pin.”
