Registration for Community Garden plots now open
Garden planning is taking place as recent temperatures slowly thaw the frozen ground. Sign up now for a 15- by 15-foot garden plot in the Pine River-Backus Community Garden by calling PR-B Community Education at 218-587-2080.
Plots are $10 each, or work three volunteer hours for the community garden to off-set the cost of a plot.
Residents may sign up for two plots at a time, and if someone would like additional plots, the Community Garden Board would simply need to approve that, making sure that all who want a plot will get a plot.
A garden kick off and information session is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, May 4, at the garden plots located behind the Pine River-Backus Schools in Pine River. Learn about how to be part of this local garden, get the gardens ready to plant and grow your own produce.
The garden, located behind the PR-B School, is gearing up for its fourth year. The board — consisting of Community Education Director Troy Gregory, Linda Henkel, Lorna Koestner, Barb Mann, Ruth Palmquist, Quinn Swanson and Paul Virden — has been busy setting goals for 2013 and recruiting gardeners to plant and reap the harvest of 48 garden plots.
The entire garden area is enclosed by a 10-foot fence to prevent deer from entering, and the entry doors are safe-guarded with locks to prevent vandalism. There are plenty of water spigots with hose length to reach all the plots, and soil enhancements like manure, lime, wood ash and straw for mulch cover are provided as part of renting a garden plot.
The elementary school students also have a large plot they plant and maintain through the spring, summer and fall under the direction of Gym Scott. Produce from this plot goes to the food shelf and the summer school lunch program.
New gardeners are encouraged to learn from those gardeners who may be more experienced. A good crop on your plot can support your grocery budget to feed your family. It is also a fun family project.
Applications for plots are available from the PR-B Community Education program or register online at www.prbschools.org/communityeducation with a credit card. Call the Community Education office for more information at 218-587-2080.
The PR-B Community Garden is part of the Pine River Healthy Green Communities Partnership and is building a sustainable community one garden at a time.
