Young children, families and those who support them will be honored at the Week of the Young Child event from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Monday, April 8, in the Pine River-Backus School Commons area.

The celebration will include face painting, infant area, Smokey Bear, large vehicles, snacks, open gym, Moon Walk (must wear socks), finger printing, early childhood information and hands-on activities geared for preschool age children through third grade. An adult must accompany children.

Since the late 1990s the early childhood community has pulled together to provide a celebration of young children in the Pine River-Backus area.

The purpose of the Week of the Young Child is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

The National Association for the Education of Young Children first established the Week of the Young Child in 1971, recognizing that the early childhood years (birth through age 8) lay the foundation for children’s success in school and later life.

The Week of the Young Child is a time to plan how we — as citizens of a community, of a state, and of a nation — will better meet the needs of all young children and their families.

Monday’s event is a collaborative project between PR-B Early Childhood Family Education, Early Head Start, Head Start, Early Childhood Special Education, Early Childhood Coalition and the PR-B Family Center.
