Tent City will help raise awareness about homelessness

New Pathways, Inc., will hold its fifth annual Tent City event on Saturday, April 13, at the Northland Arboretum in Brainerd to help raise awareness about homelessness.

The event gives youth and adults a chance to experience what it’s like to be in the shoes of someone who is homeless through fun games and activities geared toward raising awareness. Participants sleep overnight at the arboretum in tents or in homemade cardboard dwellings that are judged and awarded for creativity.

New Pathways, Inc., Brainerd assists homeless families with children from Aitkin, Cass, Crow Wing, Morrison, Todd and Wadena counties. The organization has helped more than 215 families since 2005, which includes 397 children.

New Pathways’ Day Center, now called The Path to Home, is located at 714 S. Sixth St. in Brainerd. The program provides comprehensive support that includes case management, skills training and education on topics like parenting, budgeting and renting.

The Path to Home program partners with 21 local churches and many volunteers to provide housing for families experiencing homelessness. The Path to Home program has a 90 percent success rate of helping families move on to permanent housing.

Factors that contribute to homelessness are unaffordable housing, medical problems, eviction due to job loss and the breakup of families.

During the Tent City event participants play games like couch hopping, “evicted grab and go” and many new activities that are a fun and active way to raise awareness while also helping participants understand the challenges of homelessness.
