Tigers advance to Section 5A title game; PL girls defeated

The second-seeded Pine River-Backus girls’ basketball team won their first East Subsection 5A title by defeating top-seeded Isle 60-52 on Tuesday, March 5, in McGregor. Kendra Brasel had 21 points to lead the Tigers, who advance to face Upsala in the Section 5A championship game at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 8, at Crosby-Ironton High School.

In other playoff action, the season came to an end for the Pequot Lakes girls after a 76-67 loss to Crookston in the Northeast Subsection 8AA championship game on Tuesday, March 5, at Bemidji State University. Vanessa Lane scored 15 points while Kayla Miller added 14 for the Patriots, who finish 19-10 overall. The Pirates will face Prairie Center for the Section 8AA title on Friday, March 8. Pequot Lakes was the two-time defending section champion.
