Policy introduced for adding school-sponsored activities
A draft policy on adding a school-sponsored activity was introduced to the Pequot Lakes School Board on Monday night, Feb. 25.
The policy was drafted by the board’s policy committee, and it will require three readings at board meetings before the board accepts it. Monday was the first reading of the policy.
The policy introduces three ways a district-sponsored activity could be added to district offerings. All the options require final board approval.
The first option, for the district to offer the program, has a list of requirements that must be met, including that the district is financially capable of sponsoring the activity.
The other two options involve cooperative sponsorships, hosted by either the Pequot Lakes district or another district. Each had its own set of requirements to be met.
In the past, when the board was approached with a request to add a district-sponsored activity, such as soccer or skiing, the board stated it was its policy not to add any programs where a cost is incurred to the district.

Board chair Valarie Wallin named board committee appointments for 2013. The personnel committee includes board members Kim Bolz-Andolshek, Wallin and Mike Erholtz. The buildings and grounds committee includes board members Curt Johnson, Erholtz and Susan Mathison-Young. The curriculum committee includes board members Erholtz, Derrek Johnson and Brandon Andersen. The finance committee includes Andersen, Derrek Johnson and Bolz-Andolshek. In other business Monday, the board:
• Paid the bills in the amount of $3,407,591.86.
• Approved construction bond disbursements in the amount of $1,166,148.75.
• Discussed a make-up day for the Jan. 11 snow day. Currently, there will be no make-up day for students, and teachers will have flex time for work activities determined by administration. Superintendent Rick Linnell pointed out, however, that the winter season is not over yet. If more snow days occur, the board will revisit the issue.
• Approved spring coaching assignments.
