While most 8-year-old girls ask for makeup, CDs, movies, books, Barbies and American Girl dolls for their birthdays, Rose Loschko came up with a different idea.

The Nisswa Elementary School second-grader wanted to give back to her community for her birthday.

Instead of personal gifts, Rose, the daughter of Mark and Ellie Loschko of Lake Shore, asked her classmates to bring $2 or a donation to the food shelf to her birthday party Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Nisswa Community Center. The result: a little bucket of $1 bills and a table full of nonperishable food items for the food shelf.

“We were in Duluth on a family weekend and Rose saw a commercial on TV about a girl who collected donations for charity,” Ellie said. “She said, ‘I want to do that when I have a party.’”

And with 20 girls on the invitation list, Ellie said her daughter, who turned 8 on Monday, Feb. 18, didn’t need that many gifts.

Instead, this 8-year-old gave a generous gift to those in need.
