Appointment of Peterson to school board rescinded
Jerry Peterson was appointed to the Pine River-Backus School Board in December, but that appointment was rescinded first thing at the board’s reorganizational meeting Monday, Jan. 7.
Board Chair Garny Gaffey reported that rescinding was the recommendation of the board’s legal counsel, as the appointment violated Minnesota state statute.
Peterson was still on the PR-B School Board when he was appointed to replace the position vacated by Jim Palmer, who resigned in November.
Peterson's regular term was to end at the end of 2012, when he was appointed to the board in Palmer's vacated position.
Though Peterson abstained from the vote that appointed him, the statue states, “No ... district officer shall be appointed to fill a vacancy in elective office if the officer has the power to make the appointment.”
The board decided at its regular meeting, which followed the reorganizational meeting Monday, that it will accept applications for the vacant position until Jan. 25, interview for the position on Jan. 29, and plan to fill the position at the Feb. 11 regular board meeting.
In other business Monday, the board:
• Directed administration to make recommendation for reductions in programs and positions and reasons therefore. This puts in place the process and procedure needed to make financial reductions if necessary to keep the district within the budget guidelines established by the board.
• Authorized posting for a 5.5 hour per day food service position.
• Continued a discussion on superintendent goals. Superintendent Cathy Bettino will use her recent evaluation to develop her goals, then create a future evaluation form reflective of both her goals and her previous evaluation form. She plans to present her goals and evaluation to the board.
