Walker man sentenced for murder

A 21-year-old Walker man was sentenced Monday, Nov. 26, to 18 years in prison for the March 21 death of Jason Dale Howard, 22.

Cass County Attorney Christopher Strandlie said Sheldon James Smith was sentenced after previously entering a guilty plea to second-degree intentional murder.

According to the criminal complaint and investigation, law enforcement and medical emergency personnel were summoned to a residence on Midway Drive near Walker at approximately 10:15 p.m. Upon arrival it was discovered that Howard had been stabbed in the upper chest. He was airlifted to Essentia Health St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd, where he subsequently died.

Investigation revealed that two groups of individuals had been having a series of physical and verbal confrontations in days prior to March 21. The situation culminated by the two groups getting into a physical fight where Smith stabbed Howard.

Judge John Smith pronounced the sentence in Cass County District Court.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office and the Leech Lake Tribal Police Department were involved with the investigation.
