Longtime Backus city employee Dale Vredenburg received two gift cards from local businesses at Monday’s city council meeting in appreciation for his dedication to the city.
Vredenburg spent 27 years working for the city as a part-time police chief and part-time chief of maintenance. He retired as police chief a year ago but continued in maintenance until last September, when he retired.
He has worn many different hats in the city and had many responsibilities, including plowing the city streets and putting up the Christmas lights.
Council member Rae Borst noted that when Vrendenburg plowed, he made sure to plow out the end of residents’ driveways as a courtesy.
Although Vredenburg had officially retired in September, he had been gone hunting for the past two city council meetings so he was unable to be honored by the council until Monday.
