Chef's Hat: Give your meal a crunch with french-fried onions
Recently, while looking through one of my kitchen cupboards, I ran across a can of French’s French Fried Onions. I am sure these were originally bought to make a green bean casserole, but for some reason they made it to the back of the cupboard and not into a holiday dish.
Not that a green bean casserole can’t be served at times other than holidays, but it just did not seem appropriate to serve them in a hot dish and I knew there had to be other ways to use this can of crunchy little onions.
All it took was a little bit of searching and I ran across dozens of easy and tasty-looking recipes.
One of the first things I found is that you can make these crunchy bites yourself. In a way, it is like making onion rings, only in miniature size. It is a fun recipe to make, but for those of us with limited time, the canned version works quite well in recipes.
I have only tried a few recipes (besides the all famous green bean casserole) using French’s French Fried Onions, but I imagine you can crush them up and mix a bit in almost any recipe that calls for some kind of breading. In some recipes you may even be able to completely replace bread crumbs and just use these nice, crispy onions.
This tasty little morsels are often appealing to kids. So if you have some picky eaters in your family, adding these onions to your recipes may be a great way to get your family to try something new.
Crunch away the winter blues with a new recipe. Happy eating!
