Renegade Chef: We need comfort in 2013

We are survivors.

The end of the world — a rather hybrid hypothesis born from the minds of ancient Mayans, Nostradamus, Leonardo da Vinci and the History Channel — has come and gone.

Some of us may be disappointed.

After all, we are facing a “fiscal cliff” (as of this writing), unemployment is still rampant and the recession can’t decide whether to depress or progress.

North Korea and Iran want to blow someone up and they don’t like us, in particular.

The Mideast could solve all of its problems by joining the NFL, but they don’t want to deal with all the concussion issues.

To top it all off, crazy people are shooting our kids.

I think we should breathe in the new year easily, yet reflectively — a long, deep breath. Look into the faces around us and smile at them as if they are friends, even if we don’t know them.

Buy a stranger a drink and be thankful for the same.

Do unto others as you would have them do to you.

2012 was a very tough year. I hope things get better in 2013.
