Deer hunters who had every advantage at their command and missed their deer should take a few lessons from Tom Bogart, who killed his deer under almost impossible circumstances. Tom broke his back during the war and since then has dragged himself around on crutches, not even having the use of the one bum leg that remains.

From the Pine River Journal

Thanksgiving Day began with a feeling of disaster in our Village when citizens were awakened by the ominous sound of the fire alarm. Shortly after 1:15 a.m., Mrs. Effie Ferguson detected the smell of smoke.

The Backus Chamber of Commerce together with the Backus Fire Department will have their annual Christmas party at the Fire Hall Dec. 21.

Union workers from the Durkee plant and Sonoco Products Company officials have reached a severance pay agreement for the 46 workers who will lose their jobs Dec. 31, when the Pine River wood products plant will cease operations.
