Volunteers needed for this year's free tax help program
Anyone interested in helping others with tax form preparation is invited to participate in the upcoming tax aide program. The program gives volunteers training in basic federal and state income tax preparation prior to their service as a volunteer tax aide. This free tax help program is available for persons of all ages.
Volunteers will be given four to five days of free training in both federal and state tax preparation, which includes free tax manuals with tests and a loaned laptop. This year’s training program includes sessions at the Hackensack Senior Center in Hackensack on Jan. 6-10, 2014, according to Patty Herheim, the tax aide district coordinator. Registration for this program is necessary. “This program is a wonderful source for both the young and the senior citizens. Our volunteers get a great deal of satisfaction from helping people deal with the challenges of filling out their tax forms.”
After passing an open book test you will be certified. You will then be assigned to a site as near as possible to your home. Each site is open for four hours every week from Feb. 1 through April 15. We need additional volunteers at several sites, particularly in the Cass Lake, Pine River and Walker areas. If you pass the test, you will be reimbursed for your mileage used during training and from Feb. 1 through April 15.
This program is administered and supported by the IRS, Minnesota Department of Revenue and AARP (you need not be a member of AARP to participate). As registration is necessary, to register or for other information concerning the tax aide program contact district coordinator Patty Herheim at 218-342-3373 or Carolyn Rude at 218-547-2085.
