Inspiration: Free safe deposit box

Do you have a safe deposit box? You may have something that you consider to be so precious that you would be heart-broken if it was lost or stolen. So for peace of mind, you have put your items in safekeeping, at the bank. You always know where to go to get the items, and you always know the items are secure in the steel box that you had to pay for.

In the past I have talked about garage sales. Now I’m going to talk about an auction. Have you ever been to an auction where people could bid on unclaimed items that people left behind in safe deposit boxes?

It’s been said the value of something is in the eyes of the beholder. Unclaimed property was being auctioned because people had died, or people had neglected to take back that which they had considered at one time to be precious in their sight.

At the auction you could find a belt buckle, diplomas, train tickets, marbles, report cards, rosaries, Boy Scout patches, telegrams, letters and a newspaper article of a mother who sobs at the guilty verdict, because her son had been convicted of murder. She had pleaded with the judge to spare her son. She even went so far as to scream for her life to be taken, in place of her son.

As suspected, there was money, coin collections, jewelry, watches and photographs. It may have made you curious, wondering what each item meant to someone.

The auction probably had something for everyone, and it also had a message for everyone. All the stuff that was left behind was a reminder of what will happen when our life is finished here on earth. Nothing, absolutely nothing of this world, will go with us, when we pass on — everything gets left here. You will never see a U-Haul behind a hearse!

So the question for each of us is, “In the wake of one day passing from this life, what will we leave behind, which will speak volumes about what we valued, during the time that God gave us life here on earth?”

We may leave a steel safe deposit box that will not be forgotten or overlooked. It may speak of some things we obviously must have considered valuable, but it will only speak ever so softly, in comparison to the legacy we leave behind.

Will people say you talked to them about God, about your personal Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ? Will they say you shared God’s Word, His promises with them?

Perhaps people will say you spent your lifetime of energy and blessings investing in what God so dearly loves — People. Will you leave behind a life that wasn’t consumed by this world, but rather by being “sold out” to the rock solid promises of Jesus Christ?

What is the “ultimate safe deposit box?” Why, of course, it’s Heaven, and we can thank God for that. Colossians, chapter 1, verse 5 says, “And you are looking forward to the joys of heaven, and have been ever since the Gospel was first preached to you.” (LB) John, chapter 3, verse 16 is one of God’s promises for you. It says, “For God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son so that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (LB)

You and I can be in safekeeping forever. You and I can have heaven, and that’s a “safe deposit box” that you don’t have to pay for, because Jesus has already paid the price. Surrender to Jesus — He offers you the free gift of heaven.

Why not surrender? You will have to surrender everything, and leave it all behind, when you pass on — and don’t forget to pass on your faith in Jesus — That’s a legacy worth leaving behind!
