Boys throughout lakes area need need mentors

In a previous Waiting for a Mentor article, an urgent plea went out to recruit women and couples to mentor girls through the Kinship Lake Country Office, serving the Pequot Lakes and Pine River-Backus school districts.

Thankfully, five individuals came forward and hopefully will be matched soon with some of these girls. Although a waiting list remains, we are encouraged to see more folks making a commitment to our youth.

Now, let’s turn the tables and talk about the boys who are waiting throughout the Brainerd lakes area.

Earlier this month a man stopped into our Brainerd office to complete the application process to become a mentor. We told him about the various boys who are waiting to receive the happy news that a mentor has been found.

As we talked, he learned about a young boy who lives downtown and doesn’t have a backyard, another who lives with elderly grandparents, two who had recently lost a significant person in their lives and two more who have been waiting for more than a year.

What would your decision be? Who would you choose?

There are currently 36 children on our waiting list in the Brainerd lakes area, 25 of whom are boys. These incredible kids, loaded with promise and potential, are living in our towns and desiring to be a part of your world.

Which child gets a mentor this week? That’s yet to be decided. But when that decision is made, there will be 24 boys remaining on the waiting list. Would you be willing to share a couple of hours each week with one of these boys?

Be a friend. Influence a life. Be a mentor.
