What about me?

Summer is here and the stores, restaurants and beaches in our Brainerd lakes area are packed with tourists and all the activity they bring with them.

Memories are being made daily — catching that monster bass, skimming across the water on a tube or roasting marshmallows on a campfire, to name a few.

But step away from the crowds amidst all the excitement and you will experience a different setting. So many children in our own community are not capable of satisfying any of these simple desires. They are only dreams.

Do you have room in your boat for an extra child, the patience to teach a boy to put a worm on a hook or show a girl how to row a canoe? Is there an empty space next to you while you pull the weeds in your garden or hike through the woods? Is there a place in your picnic basket for one more sandwich?

By sharing their lives and including a child in their daily adventures, mentors can make such an impact. Simple things like a shared conversation or a look of acceptance can alter a child’s outlook on life.

Be that person, make that choice. You will receive so much more than you could ever give.

I've worked at the Brainerd Dispatch with various duties since Dec. 7, 1983. Starting off as an Ad Designer and currently Director of Audience Development. The Dispatch has been an interesting and challenging place to work. I'm fortunate to have made many friends, both co-workers and customers.
