Crow Wing County seeks adult family foster home providers

Crow Wing County Community Services is seeking people who wish to provide foster care to adults with disabilities.

While foster care is often thought of as a program for children, foster care services are also needed to help adults maintain their independence.

Crow Wing County currently has eight licensed adult family foster homes that provide a caring and productive home environment to adults who are either developmentally disabled, physically challenged, mentally ill or elderly.

“It is a welcome option for those individuals who are not able to live independently in their own homes,” said Gwen Anderson, Health and Social Services Division manager with Crow Wing County Community Services.

The payment received by adult foster care providers varies depending on the particular needs of the adult receiving care. Each adult may require varying levels of supervision and support. Providers may need to have specialized training and equip their homes to assist certain populations.

Prior to a placement, there is involvement with the adult’s family, social workers, guardians and the adult themselves in making the decision of which home would best meet the adult’s needs.

People interested in serving as adult foster care providers are encouraged to contact the county. The licensing process includes an application, background studies on all household members and a home inspection. Applicants must complete training prior to licensing, which includes education on mandated reporting and vulnerable adults.

Crow Wing County will assist applicants through the licensing process and assist the applicant with obtaining the necessary training prior to becoming licensed. The licensing process generally takes three to four months.
