Pequot Lakes girl is waiting for a mentor

Email

Before a child is enrolled in Kinship Partners and the search for a mentor begins, a thorough interview is done with the parent/guardian and child.

We discuss topics such as interests, family background, academic performance and the child’s health history. Another revealing question asked of every child is, “Why do you want a Kinship Partner?”

Many of our kids cite a desire to experience new activities and to be with other people outside of family. Specific responses include, “So it feels like I have a real dad” and “I was so close to my grandpa and really miss having him around.”

Ten-year-old Kristi stated simply, “To get away.”

Kristi lives with her dad and three siblings in Pequot Lakes. She does fairly well in school and especially enjoys science experiments and art.

Kristi has also been involved in basketball and soccer. In addition to sports, she is a tomboy at heart, loves animals and would like to learn to ride a horse.

But this fifth-grader has also been a victim of bullying and she doesn’t have much contact with her mother. These situations have been hard on her.

Kristi looks forward to getting away with her mentor to go fishing, attend movies or do some baking together.

Kinship Partners serves families in Crow Wing and southern Cass counties and the Staples/Motley area by providing positive role models to youth ages 5 to 14. Offices are in Brainerd, Pequot Lakes, Crosby and Staples.
