Nisswa Garden Club preparing for upcoming events

The Nisswa Garden Club is busy getting ready for many upcoming events, including its 75th Garden Show in July.

The club’s annual plant sale will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 1, at Schaefer’s Foods in Nisswa. The sale will offer annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs and house plants grown by club members.

Chairperson for this event is Sue Jordan.

“A Blooming Success: 75 Years of Garden Show History” is the theme for the 75th annual garden show to be held July 31 at the Lutheran Church of the Cross in Nisswa. This is members’ opportunity to exhibit flowers and vegetables from their gardens, to enter the artistic division with a beautiful floral arrangement and to bring homemade goodies for the bake sale.

Also included in the day’s events is a plant sale where a variety of annuals, perennials and herbs are sold.

The Steering Committee for this event includes Jim Sherwood, Barb Bogdanovich, Dorothy Johnson and Jill Macnamara, who work with many members who make this event possible. Watch for upcoming details on this show.

The club meets the fourth Thursday of each month at the Lutheran Church of the Cross and begins with a catered lunch, except as otherwise noted. Each month’s meeting features a speaker on a gardening topic.

Dan Klein and Macnamara will present the program in April on “What’s in Your Pot? (Container Gardening)”

Club president Jim Sherwood will present “Crazy about Annuals” at the May 23 meeting at 6:30 p.m. at The Treehouse.

Judy Ramsay and Julie Schroer from Jeans’ The Right Plant Place in Perham will present “Perennials — New and Underused” at the June 27 meeting.

The club has 97 families with 118 members, including 10 Master Gardeners. Membership is open to anyone interested in gardening.

For reservations to a monthly meeting, call reservation coordinator Sandy Thorson at 218-562-5292.

Service projects and charitable support are part of the club’s activities. Club members plant and maintain annuals at the Nisswa Community Center and Nisswa Elementary School, and the planter boxes at the memorial gardens at the gazebo.

The club provides financial support and encouragement to the Central Lakes College Endowed Scholarship Trust Fund, Central Lakes College Scholarship Gift, Deep Portage Conservation Reserve, Nisswa Elementary School Scholarships to Deep Portage, and the Northland Arboretum.

Club officers for 2013 are president, Jim Sherwood; president-elect, JoAnn Weaver; secretary, Sue Jordan; and treasurer, Charlie Boudrye.
