75 years ago, Jan. 27, 1938

From the Pine River Journal

Pine River has been buzzing with news of the confessed kidnapper and slayer of Chas. Ross, wealthy Chicagoan, the past week, probably due to the closeness of the killer’s activities, which were in the vicinity of Pine River for about two weeks. The body was found in a cave about 30 miles east of Pine River near Emily and the ransom notes were found about the same distance north of Pine River, near Leech Lake.

The next time you walk down the street and some friend greets you with, “It’s a swell winter we’re having,” just tell him he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

From the Pine River Journal

In spite of a very stormy day, the Open House at Smith’s Pine River Feed was very well attended, a total of about 200 patrons enjoying the coffee and cake served by Mr. and Mrs. Don Smith.

Elmer J. Weise, Pine River, recently purchased an Aberdeen-Angus bull from Robert E. Wright, Felton, Minn.

Susan Holden, formerly of Backus, received a juris doctor degree from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul Jan. 17. She is the daughter of Wayne Holden and Donna Holden of Backus.

When you look up the word “rival” in the dictionary, Mr. Webster says, “One of two or more striving to reach or obtain something that only one can possess.” On Tuesday night, the Pine River Tigers were the ones who achieved success.

Last year, the winter was dry and mild. This year it’s dry and cold. Both years, businesses are feeling the snowless weather eat into their bottom line.

Some Pine River-Backus students will be riding new buses in the near future. The school board approved the purchase of two buses from Hoglund Bus Company, at a total expense of $110,973.
