Area residents participate in Lakewood Health beginners triathlon

More than 70 participants from Staples, Motley, Little Falls, Lake Shore, Nisswa, Brainerd, Long Prairie, Detroit Lakes, Wadena, St. Cloud, Pillager, Browerville and Perham participated in the beginners triathlon Saturday, July 27, at the Dower Lake recreation area in Staples.

The event was sponsored by the Lakewood Health System Special Events and Employee Wellness committees, along with Lakewood physicians and the Staples Community Center.

The event raised $1,669.90, which will go to the Staples Community Center.

The triathlon consisted of a quarter-mile swim, six-mile bike ride and a one-and-one-half mile run. Participants competed either as individuals, or as a three-person team.

Event winners:

Men: first, Riant Northway, Lake Shore, 37:29; second, Aron Stumvoll, Nisswa, 38:04; third, Zane Freeman, Detroit Lakes, 38:20.

Women: first, Annika Rick, Browerville, 45:07; second, Kate Johnson, Nisswa, 46:31; third, Sarah Israelson, Staples, 46:46.

Team of three: first, Kelli Gibbs and Mike Hudalla of Staples and Dave Freeman of Motley, 39:55; second, Stacy, Corrina and Caden Brose of Little Falls, 40:38; third, Rebecca, Rachel and Sarah Daly of Staples, 51:32.
