Record number of babies delivered at Lakewood Health

2012 was a big year for the Obstetrics (OB) Department at Lakewood Health System in Staples.

The OB Department had a record 443 deliveries, with five sets of twins, bringing the total number of babies to 448. This number is up from 2011’s 404 deliveries.

Along with this record number of babies, OB earned patient satisfaction scores and is part of a statewide safety initiative.

In a national health care patient satisfaction survey conducted by Press Ganey, Lakewood’s OB Department ranked in the 98th percentile nationwide.

Other scores include Lakewood’s 22 percent C-section rate, which is lower than the national average, which states that one out of every three women will give birth via C-section.

Lakewood had an 86 percent success rate when it came to Vaginal Birth after Cesarean (VBAC) attempts.

Lakewood is part of a safety initiative created by the Minnesota Hospital Association, the Minnesota Department of Health and the March of Dimes to decrease the number of early elective deliveries at less than 39 weeks, unless medically necessary.

Women who carry their babies to full term have better outcomes for many reasons, and with this initiative, it will reduce the national C-section rate as well as NICU admissions.
