75 years ago, Feb. 3, 1938

From the Pine River Journal

A project has been started by the local WPA crew, building a gravel walk on the south side of the highway crossing the dam. The purpose of the walk is to eliminate pedestrians from the highway, which is more or less dangerous, especially at night.

Charlie Wood’s general merchandise store of Hackensack burned to the ground Tuesday afternoon. The fire was discovered about noon and is thought to have originated around the chimney.

If and when the State Highway Department decides to raze the Lake Region Hotel for purposes of highway improvement, civic officials and citizens should make it a point to be present.

The Pine River Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol took part in the search for a Taylorcraft airplane reported missing in the Alexandria area.

The Miss Pine River Committee has announced the pageant will be Feb. 27 and is asking sponsors to contact committee members as soon as possible. Jackie Wetrosky and Sue Stephan are once again the committee in charge and will soon announce the theme and names of candidates.

Terry McGaughey spoke to the Backus City Council on Monday, Feb. 1, about the proposed Bunyanland Trail between Brainerd and Bemidji.

(photo) After standing vacant for two years, the former Kitchigami Regional Library (KRL) building was finally torn down Tuesday afternoon as library employees looked on. “There goes my office!” said Marian Ridge, KRL director.

Since the beginning of the school year, students from Sue Spier’s Pine River kindergarten class and Tom Medved’s sixth-grade class have been sending letters, pictures and care packages to Nelson, who was serving a tour in Afghanistan.
