Library Column: Daddy's Night Out Withthe Kids planned Jan. 29
BY CLAIRE NAGEL
The library, along with the Early Childhood Coalition and the Early Childhood Family Education program, is sponsoring a Daddy’s Night Out With the Kids to be held at the library on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 6 p.m.
The theme for the evening is “It’s Snowing at the Library.” Singing songs, doing snow activities, reading books about snow, making a project and making a snowman treat will make this a fun evening for everyone.
Besides dads, this event is open to anyone who wishes to have a fun night out with the children.
Spring anyone? Peonies with Harvey Buchite
Love spring? Love flowers? Love peonies?
Harvey Buchite, a Minnesota gardener extraordinaire, will share his love of peonies at this Legacy program to be presented Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 6:30 p.m. at the library.
Past president of the American Peony Society, he is an advocate for growing these wonderful perennials and, along with his wife, Brigitte, grows more than 600 varieties of peonies.
Don’t miss this spring-in-February free program open to anyone interested.
AARP Tax-Aide available at the library
Starting Thursday, Feb. 7, the library will again host AARP Tax-Aide.
Tax experts will be available from noon to 4 p.m. Thursdays in February and, if needed, in March.
Appointments for the 45-minute sessions are necessary and may be made by signing up at the library or by calling 568-6181.
This is a free service aimed at seniors, young families and those with low to middle incomes. Thanks, AARP volunteers.
Reading to Rocky
We in the lakes area are fortunate to have so many different opportunities. Starting Feb. 9 from 10 a.m. to noon, the library is pleased to be able to offer to the community’s children (beginning readers ages kindergarten through, say, fifth grade) a certified Pet Therapy Dog named Rocky.
The kids will read to him.
Children, especially those who struggle with reading, can really benefit from reading to dogs. Rocky and his friend, Linda Shalley, will be at the library on the second Saturday of each month.
I’m so eager to meet Rocky and Linda and to see how the program goes.
Our volunteers give the library gifts beyond compare — their time, their expertise, their good humor — themselves. Thank you all so much.
Quote for the month
“The love of learning, the sequestered nooks,
And all the sweet serenity of books.”
— Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
