For the 16th year in a row, Fun Books for Kids gave students in the area each a book to take home and keep as a holiday gift.

The organization handed out books Wednesday, Dec. 18, to every student at Eagle View Elementary School. Pequot Lakes Middle School students also received books, as did Crosslake Community School students.

Last year, Fun Books for Kids, a nonprofit, gave 4,600 books to area children. The organization has five distribution days a year, including the holiday distribution that was Dec. 18.

On other distribution days students can exchange “book bucks,” which they earn by reading, for a book of their choice. Each student also gets a book for his or her birthday.

Recently Fun Books for Kids began a program where students can bring in used books for “exchange bucks.” The books are then used on distribution days or donated to classrooms and libraries.

Fun Books for Kids’ objective is to promote the fun of recreational reading. In addition to handing out the books, some volunteers read aloud to classrooms.
