First graders make tasty towns
It was a sweet day for first-graders at Eagle View Elementary School on Friday, Dec. 13, as they frosted and decorated graham cracker gingerbread houses. Each class boasted a large spread of candy that students dug into for decorating.
The project doubled as an engineering lesson, so students first drew a plan for their house. They were required to decorate their houses with a door, at least three landscaping decorations and at least one pattern.
After the houses were completed, students placed them on a paper neighborhood, which doubled as a lesson on basic directions and addresses. Students also decorated their neighborhood with street signs and plants, and named their streets.
While they couldn’t eat (too much of) the candy for decorating, each student decorated and ate a piece of graham cracker once the project was complete.
