Area youth to star in 'The Wizard of Oz'
Auditions for Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre’s original musical production of “The Wizard of Oz” will be held from 12:30-4 p.m. Monday, June 24, in the Pine River-Backus High School gym (Door 2).
Up to 75 local children (ages K-18) are needed to play the roles of: Dorothy, Toto, the Munchkins, Glinda the Good Witch, the Tinman, the Cowardly Lion, the Green Guard, the Wizard, the Emerald City Traders, the Flying Monkeys, the Winkies, Aunt Em, Uncle Henry and the Yellow Brick Road.
Two professional actor/directors from Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre’s staff will conduct the auditions as well as direct the production and play the roles of The Scarecrow (Ben Griffin) and the Wicked Witch of the West (Carlie Johnson).
The audition process will last up to two hours and all auditioners are required to be in attendance the complete time.
Performances will be at 7 p.m. Friday, June 28, and 10 a.m. Saturday, June 29, during Summerfest.
Tickets for each performance are $5 and will be available before each performance. This week-long Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre (PFCT) residency is being sponsored by Pine River-Backus Community Education at 218-587-2080.
Griffin is originally from Denver, Colo., and lives in Benton, Ark. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theatre with an emphasis in acting from Arkansas State University. Recently, he completed a touring children’s theatre show called “Lily & The Apple Seed.”
He will be making is PFCT debut as the The Scarecrow in “The Wizard of Oz.”
Johnson is originally from Tifton, Ga., and lives in Valdosta, Ga. She recently received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theatre performance from Valdosta State University. She has volunteered as a camp counselor at a summer youth theatre camp in her hometown over the past few years.
This summer, she joins the PFCT team as The Wicked Witch in “The Wizard of Oz.”
