MN Boomer Corps program launched

Baby Boomers can now volunteer with Lutheran Social Service (LSS) Senior Corps helping older adults or students in their community and still qualify for a stipend by serving only 10 hours a week.

MN Boomer Corps is a pilot project offered through LSS intended to demonstrate the ability to meet more community needs by enrolling new, busy Boomer volunteers who can commit to 10 hours per week to help others. Following are program details:

• While focused on Boomers (born 1946-64), 25 percent of enrollees may be older.

• This program is for newly enrolled volunteers only.

• A tax-free stipend of $2.65 per hour will be paid to volunteers who serve 10 hours per week.

• Mileage is reimbursed at 35 cents a mile.

• Volunteers will earn stipended time off.

• No income restrictions exist.

• Background check and ongoing trainings will be required.

• Volunteers may switch to the regular 15 hour per week program if they choose at any point but may not switch back to the 10 hour per week program.

For more than 20 years LSS has managed the Senior Corps Programs (Senior Companions/Foster Grandparents) throughout much of Minnesota. These programs have demonstrated the powerful impact of engaging committed older adults in serving frail elders and at-risk children.

Impacts for 2011 include:

• 334 Senior Companions provided 266,000 hours of service to 2,297 frail elders, allowing them to stay right where they want to be – in their own homes.

• 419 Foster Grandparents provided 295,000 hours of one-to-one tutoring and mentoring to 3,062 children, helping them to boost their reading ability and academic performance.

• Volunteers report a better quality of life, with a renewed sense of purpose and better emotional and physical health; 98 percent responded that they were satisfied with their volunteer position.
