Artist of the Month: Dalton Dabill

Background and interests: I live in Pine River and like to hunt, fish, ride four-wheelers and snowmobile.

Future plans: I plan to attend Wadena Technical College.

Family: Bill and Terri Dabill; sister, Stephanie Wynn; and three brothers, Rory Dabill, Cody Dabill and LeRoy Hulke.

Art experience: I’ve had four years of art with Mr. Guenther. From carving decoys to building metal sculptures, I have always been interested in art projects.

What are your favorite mediums? My dad has owned his own welding and machine shop business since I was born, so building things out of metal scraps was always second nature to me. I started working with wood two years ago in Mr. Guenther’s class. I went from carving a 1955 F-100 pickup to carving spearing decoys. I really enjoy carving decoys now, making them for myself or selling them. It is probably my favorite thing to do in art.

Does your family enjoy art as much as you? I have many artists throughout my family. My great-aunt (Myrle Dabill), great-grandmother and my uncle (Tab Martin) are all well-known local artists. Also my older brother (Cody Dabill) is a very good oil painter.

I've worked at the Brainerd Dispatch with various duties since Dec. 7, 1983. Starting off as an Ad Designer and currently Director of Audience Development. The Dispatch has been an interesting and challenging place to work. I'm fortunate to have made many friends, both co-workers and customers.
