Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Fellowship to sponsor radio play Sunday

On Sunday, Dec. 9, the Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Brainerd-Pine River will sponsor a radio play at 10 p.m. on KBXE 90.5 FM and KAXE 89.9 FM on the History of the Doctrine of Discovery.

It is the story of the coming of the Europeans to the Americas and its impact on the indigenous native populations. The script was written by Gail Forsyth-Vail, produced by Wayne Leeds of Grand Rapids and features Wayne and Erika Kooda as the two actors in the play.

This is part of the project of the Unitarian Universalist Church, which has pledged to work toward the repudiation of the Doctrine of Discovery as a tenet that says indigenous people’s rights to land and life are not honored or respected and is still cited as valid in court cases.

This is especially timely in this year of the anniversary of the 1862 uprising in Minnesota when attention is on the conflict on the frontier, native American concerns and the ongoing need to address problems of discrimination, prejudice, economic deprivation and education about these issues.
