John Taylor Ward, baritone, and Scott Lykins, pianist, will present the lonely story of young love lost, though Franz Schubert’s monumental song cycle “Winterreise,” at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Nisswa.
Completed in the last year of his life, Schubert’s music perfectly harmonizes with the poems by Wilhelm Müller, creating a moving musical experience.
This concert is free. In November, Lykins and Ward staged the European debut of this performance at the Cite Internationale Universitaire de Paris.
Lykins, from the lakes area, is executive director of the Lakes Area Music Festival. He and Ward founded the Lakes Area Music Festival in 2009. Each August, the organization brings together some of the nation’s top performers for three weeks of classical music performance, including chamber music, symphonic orchestra and semi-staged opera.
A collaborative roster includes more than 80 musicians coming from ensembles and conservatories such as the Minnesota Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, New World Symphony, Metropolitan Opera, Minnesota Opera, Juilliard School, Eastman School of Music, Curtis Institute and more.
