Trumpet player Bill Simenson has performed professionally in the Twin Cities since 1983. He has played regularly with orchestras, bands and jazz ensembles. Simenson has also performed with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, the big band for the Minnesota Vikings and led the band for the Minnesota North Stars hockey team. Last year, he launched the Bill Simenson Orchestra, a 17 piece big band playing original compositions and arrangements.

The other members of the quintet include saxophone player Pete Whitman, pianist Laura Caviani, drummer J. T. Bates and bass player Chris Bates.

Vocalist Prudence Johnson’s career has taken her from honky-tonks to Carnegie Hall, the theater stage to Silver Screen and the Midwest to the Middle East. She has appeared in films by Robert Altman and Robert Redford and served for years as Garrison Keillor’s singing partner on NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion. Johnson has produced numerous CD’s including A Girl Named Vincent involving a multi-media concert presentation that toured greater Minnesota two years ago. The winner of a McKnight Fellowship for Performing Musicians, she has a steady schedule of concert and theatrical appearances in the United States, Canada and Europe.

Admission is free, but free will offerings are appreciated. Ample parking is available in Salem’s spacious parking lot.

Popcorn and lemonade will be available for donations to Salem’s missions outreach to provide clean water in Africa.

Bring your own lawn chairs, blankets and picnic baskets and enjoy this special end-of-summer Labor Day weekend musical event. In case of inclement weather, the musicians will perform inside the church.

The Music in the Park series is a community outreach activity of Salem Lutheran Church and supported by the Longville Area Community Choir. This event is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Five Wings Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
